Shan Lu (MD, Ph.D.). Dr. Lu, a professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, has been a pioneering researcher in examining the role of envelope protein conformational changes in HIV-1 as it relates to immunogenicity and viral escape. His techniques rely on the use of DNA vaccines and the flexibility they afford. Dr. Lu is also working in areas to improve the potency of genetic immunization by exploration of the influence of cytokine and adjuvants on the immune response.
His work has had a profound impact across the DNA vaccine field and vaccinology in general and during his distinguished academic and professional career has had authorship in almost 100 peer-reviewed articles covering such diverse fields as physical delivery methods of vaccines, evaluation of smallpox subunit vaccines and prion accumulation.
